OVERVIEW

Important vitamin for supporting energy production in the mitochondria of our cells.

Used to make acetyl-CoA, which allows a 2-carbon fragment from an amino acid, carbohydrate, or protein to be carried to the mitochondria for "burning" to produce energy. This type of process is called "catabolism," and is important for converting food into energy (ATP) in our body.

Also used to build fats, cholesterol, vitamin D, steroid hormones, and other components used to "build up" the body. This type of process is called "anabolism."
